Upcoming Free Speaker Meeting On February 29th to Discuss

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or “OCD”

The Mental Health Association in Forsyth County, as part of their community outreach and mental health educational services, is sponsoring a “5th Friday Mental Health Educational & Speaker Meeting” on Friday, February 29th, beginning at 10:30 AM at The Mental Health Association in Forsyth County, 1509 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem.  The mental health speakers’ meeting is FREE, open to the public and will be held in our large upstairs meeting room.  Due to limited seating persons interested in attending are asked to call the office at (336) 768-3880 in advance.

The scheduled guest speaker is Tommie Jackson, M.Div., LPC, and a Pastoral Psychotherapist in private practice in Winston-Salem.  Ms. Jackson’s talk will focus on one of the types of the anxiety disorders known as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or “OCD.”  Ms. Jackson’s informative and interactive discussion will help persons know the signs and symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and how OCD is treated.

Tommie Jackson, M.Div., LPC, received her Master’s Degree in Divinity from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina and completed her clinical training at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham.  Ms. Jackson is a Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina and is a certified with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, persons with OCD have persistent, upsetting thoughts (obsessions) and use rituals (compulsions) to control the anxiety these thoughts produce.  Most of the time, the rituals end up controlling the person and can have devastating effects on the person’s daily life, work and relationships with others.  OCD affects about 2.2 million American adults.  OCD equally strikes men and woman and its symptoms usually appear in childhood, adolescence or in early adulthood.  One-third of adults with OCD develop symptoms as children and research indicates that OCD might run in families.
