Good Morning!

You are invited to attend our “5th Friday Speaker Meeting” on FRIDAY, July 30 at 10:30 am at The Mental Health Association in Forsyth

County, 1509 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem.   Our guest speaker  is Laurie Coker.  Ms. Cocker will speak on Friday morning about her

plan to establish a Social Center run by and for individuals with a mental illness.

NOTE:  Ms. Coker’s presentation will take place in our UPSTAIRS meeting room. For more information, contact The Mental Health

Association in Forsyth County at 768-3880.

Laurie Coker has a long history of advocacy in North Carolina. She is the director of NC CANSO, a fledgling state-wide, cross disability consumer

self-support organization centered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Her interests in improving services for citizens with mental health problems,

developmental disabilities, and addiction result from her own personal experiences with these, her family experiences, and her past work as a psychiatric

nurse.  She served on the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services for six years and on

the NAMI North Carolina Board of Directors.  Laurie has interacted with leadership of other statewide consumer organizations, learning from them how

to promote a “customer”-centered service system which supports opportunity, well-being, and meaningful living for the citizens it serves.  She recently

participated on an advisory committee at the National Mental Health Consumer’s Self Help Clearing House and has been selected by the Substance Abuse

and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA) to participate in an intensive leadership institute for 2010.

Established in 1946, The Mental Health Association in Forsyth County is a non-profit, non-governmental agency that is dedicated to improving the quality

of life for persons affected by mental illness through advocacy, education and support services.  Liz Arnold, Ph.D., a licensed clinical social worker and

psychologist with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is the Association’s Board President.
